Hip-Hop lost 2 of its legendary trail-blazers within a few days of each other: DJ Polo and Chino XL.
DJ Polo, a member of the iconic Juice Crew and one-half of Kool G Rap & DJ Polo, had passed away.
On Sunday, July 28, 2024, Polo's family confirmed the veteran artist's passing in a statement posted to Instagram. "He was not only a legend to the hip hop community but also to his family and we celebrate his life and legacy now and forever," the family said in their statement.
"R.I.P. to a dear friend and a Brother from another Household," Kool G Rap wrote on Instagram. "He is a Legend to Hip Hop and Juice Crew history. DJ Polo! May Light from the Highest be upon him."
DJ Polo got his start in the music industry in the mid-1980s, when producer Eric B. introduced him to Kool G Rap.
Polo and the KGR recorded their first demo at Mr. Magic and DJ Marley Marl's studio in 1986 - the famous Hip-Hop anthem "It's A Demo". Marley was reportedly so impressed by their work that he welcomed them into the Juice Crew.
Kool G Rap and DJ Polo eventually broke away from the Juice Crew and continued to make music as a duo. They dropped their classic debut album Road to the Riches in 1989; and went on to release two historical and culture-shifting albums, Wanted: Dead or Alive (1990) and Live and Let Die (1992). > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFTMjitEPnM
Respected lyricist, actor, and author Chino XL has reportedly passed away at 50.
On Monday night, July 29, numerous artists and fans took to social media to mourn the loss of the New York City-born MC after the news broke.
Aside from his own multiple music projects, Chino XL's lyrical guest features are numerous and memorable - including the performance within Sway & King Tech's "The Anthem" (1996).
Chino XL got his start in the music industry as a teenager. At age 16, Chino was signed to Rick Rubin's American Recordings label. By 1991, he had formed the rap duo Art of Origin with producer Kaoz.
After the duo split, Chino XL released his debut Billboard charted solo album Here to Save You All (1996) – featuring the MTV frequent video air-played single “Kreep” that garnered him nationwide recognition, in addition to the dynamic single “No Complex”. > https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AOU5LOYvibQ
The Puerto Rican rapper went on to release three more solo albums I Told You So (2001), Poison Pen (2006) and RICANstruction: The Black Rosary (2012).
He also dropped a collaborative project with Playalitical called Something Sacred in 2008, hooked up for Balt Getty's Chino VS Balt EP (2020) and teamed up with Stu Bangas last year with their joint album God's Carpenter (2023). Recently, Chino appeared on "Pendulum Swing" from Rakim's new album G.O.Ds NETWORK - REB7RTH (2024).
Chino had also broadened his talent toward acting roles in The Walking Dead, Reno 911!, CSI: Miami, and Alex & Emma.
